So you think you can...draw!
Mar 26, 2010 at 16:03
I'm loving College. Especially since I've found a way of including TV watching in my study curriculum!
For our sketching class, we had to draw a dress from five different angles. Unable to find anyone willing to stand still long enough five times, I resorted to freeze-framing people on So You Think You Can Dance. Here's Ivy from that fabulous Paso Doble routine a few weeks back!
Getting lots of help from Nancy Reigelman's book Colors for Modern Fashion -
a great book with lots of tips and techniques for using coloured markers in particular.
Full of fabulous examples too...
Here's one I copied earlier ...

I see yo're studying fashion at MSIT.
What course are you doing and how are you finding it?
I am looking at enrolling next year and would love to hear how the course is...
thanks,
Michelle
I'm loving it Michelle! I like the lecturers, many of whom are jack of all trades who studied at MSIT, worked in industry and came back to teach.
I'm enrolled in the Advanced Diploma Fashion Design & Technology (2.5 years) but students can opt out at the end of 1 year with a Certificate IV, or after 1.75 years with a Diploma.
First year has lots of contact hours (26!) so we're kept pretty busy with patternmaking, drawing, sewing, computing (Photoshop & Illustrator), learning about fabrics and the fashion industry.
Lots of students seem to want to design, but you'll also have to develop great skills in the less glamorous areas of patternmaking and sewing. Luckily, I'm loving learning them all!
A little caveat - I read a book that suggested that in Britain (don't know about Australia) only 10% of fashion students go on to work in the industry. So there are probably more "sensible" study options, but so long as your eyes are open and you really love it, go for it!
Thanks so much for that advice...
I have been working in the fashion industry for a couple of years now in the surf industry and just want to further my skill levels and move out of the surf side of things.
Im thinking of just doing the diploma.
Thanks again and good luck with your studies!

Thanks Michelle. Glad to see there is gainful employment available out there!
(BTW, you could probably get some exemptions or be fast-tracked through some subjects, saving you time, but unfortunately not money, as you still pay fees for those subjects.)
