1. Requirements

For Best in Show Medal, we used:

50 cm x 5 cm strip of black pinstripe fabric

40 cm x 3.5cm wide blue stripe ribbon, other ribbon scraps

Button, dental floss or fishing line, safety pin

2. Prepare Ruffles

For fabric ruffle: Fold fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press.

Ribbon ruffles need no preparation.

3. Stitch fabric ruffle

Set machine to widest zig-zag stitch. Lay dental floss or fishing line parallel to raw edges.  Zig-zag along length, 0.5 cm from raw edges, keeping floss/line centred in middle of stitch.

4. Ribbon ruffles

Stitch a 40 cm  length of ribbon the same way. 

5. Gather ruffle

Gather both ruffles the same way by drawing up dental floss/fishing line and tying securely.

6. Stitch ruffle ends

Stitch short ends of ruffle together, 1 cm from raw edges.  Finish by zig-zagging raw edges together.

7. Trim & clip corners

Trim & clip corners.  Be careful not to cut the dental floss/fishing line!

8. Make tails

Cut ribbon scraps into inverted V shape at bottom.  Zig-zag top edges together and trim neatly.

9. Join ruffles

Hand-stitch ruffles together securely. 

10. Attach button & tails

Hide handstitching by sewing button to front.  Handstitch tails to back.

11. Add safety pin

Stitch safety pin to tails. (We've used embroidery floss, but ordinary thread will be fine.)

12. Admire own handiwork
